The university's origins trace back to 1611 when King Sigismund III Vasa granted the Jesuit College in Poznań the status of a university. The modern incarnation of AMU was officially established on May 7, 1919, following Poland's regaining of independence. Initially known as Wszechnica Piastowska (Piast University), it was renamed the University of Poznań in 1920 and later, in 1955, adopted its current name to honor Adam Mickiewicz.
