As one of the leading private research and teaching universities in the United States, Northwestern has two primary campuses situated along Lake Michigan. The main 240-acre campus is located in Evanston, just 12 miles from downtown Chicago, while a 25-acre campus is based in Chicago itself. The third campus is in Doha, Qatar. Northwestern serves over 8,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 13,000 graduate and professional students. A member of the Big Ten conference, its athletic teams are known as the Wildcats. Morton Schapiro has been Northwestern's president since 2009.

Northwestern admits students with strong academic records from a wide range of social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. Over 90 percent of undergraduate applicants rank in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. The university’s student body represents all 50 states and includes more than 4,300 international students from over 120 countries.

Northwestern is home to 12 colleges and schools, including the Bienen School of Music, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, School of Communication, School of Education and Social Policy, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, The Graduate School, Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, Pritzker School of Law, Kellogg School of Management, Feinberg School of Medicine, School of Professional Studies, and Northwestern University in Qatar.
