Overview

Since its establishment in 1991, the University of Potsdam (UP) has grown into a prominent research institution in Germany. With over 20,000 students, it is the largest university in the federal state of Brandenburg. The university is structured into seven faculties: the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, Digital Engineering Faculty (introduced in 2017), and Faculty of Health Sciences (established in 2018).

From its inception, UP has been known for its strong collaborations with prestigious research institutes such as Max Planck, Leibniz, and Helmholtz. Potsdam itself has evolved into a thriving "science city," with more than 10,000 researchers among its 175,000 residents and over 40 academic institutions. In addition to its historical landmarks and picturesque gardens, the city has become an integral part of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan scientific hub.

UP offers a diverse range of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, including more than 25 international MA programs, 18 of which are conducted in English. As a publicly accredited university, UP provides tuition-free degree programs, with only a nominal administrative fee required, except for certain continuing education courses.

Ranking

The University of Potsdam (UP) has consistently ranked among the top universities globally, reflecting its strong academic and research standing. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, UP secured a position in the 201–250 bracket among 2,092 universities from 115 countries. Similarly, in the QS World University Rankings 2025, it is ranked 474th worldwide, further showcasing its academic excellence. UP has also demonstrated exceptional growth in the THE Young University Rankings 2024, where it secured the 21st position globally and ranked 1st in Germany among universities under 50 years old. These rankings highlight the university’s rapid development, research impact, and increasing global recognition.
