Overview

The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is one of Switzerland’s 12 certified public universities and a proud member of swissuniversities. Comprising six faculties, USI actively engages in diverse fields of study and research, including architecture, communication sciences, computational and data science, economics, health studies, humanities, informatics, law, medicine, and biomedicine.

As a dynamic and forward-thinking institution, USI offers an interdisciplinary learning environment where students play an active role in their education, and researchers have the freedom to explore new ideas. With a community of 3,922 students and 1,008 faculty members and researchers from 114 countries, USI fosters a vibrant intellectual exchange across its four campuses in Lugano, Mendrisio, and Bellinzona. The university’s compact size promotes open dialogue and collaboration, enabling students and faculty to unlock their full potential while embracing innovative ways of thinking, learning, teaching, and working.

Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) holds strong positions in global university rankings, reflecting its academic excellence and growing international reputation. In the QS World University Rankings 2025, USI is ranked 405th globally out of 1,503 universities and holds the 8th position within Switzerland. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, USI is placed in the 301–350 bracket worldwide among 2,092 institutions, securing the 7th spot nationally. It also ranks 44th globally in the THE Young University Rankings 2024, which evaluates universities under 50 years old. Additionally, in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities, USI holds the 586th position worldwide. These rankings highlight USI’s dedication to quality education, research excellence, and its openness to global academic collaboration.
