Thomas Harper Adams, a prosperous gentleman farmer from Shropshire, left his substantial estate upon his passing in 1892 to support the advancement of both practical and theoretical agricultural education. During the agricultural depression of the time, many recognized that combining scientific knowledge with farming practices was essential for the industry's survival. The 1890s saw increased financial backing for agricultural education, leading to the establishment of specialized colleges and university departments. However, Harper Adams Agricultural College was unique as the first institution of its kind funded through a private bequest.
