Overview

Established in 1867, Howard University is a private research institution consisting of 13 schools and colleges. It offers over 120 academic programs leading to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. To date, the university has conferred more than 120,000 degrees across the arts, sciences, and humanities. Its historic main campus is situated on a hilltop in Northwest Washington, just a few blocks from the renowned U Street and Howard Theatre. Located only two miles from the U.S. Capitol, Howard provides numerous internship opportunities for students, while many of its alumni contribute to shaping national and international policies. The university is a prominent leader in STEM education, with the National Science Foundation recognizing it as the top institution producing African-American undergraduates who go on to earn doctoral degrees in science and engineering.
