Overview

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), located in Pasadena, California, about 11 miles from downtown Los Angeles, is a premier institution for science and engineering research and education.

Caltech boasts high research output and world-class facilities, including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Caltech Seismological Laboratory, and the International Observatory Network. As one of the few U.S. institutes of technology focused mainly on technical arts and applied sciences, Caltech's highly selective admissions process accepts only the most talented students.

Founded in 1891 by Amos G. Throop as a preparatory and vocational school, Caltech’s mission has always been to “expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education.” It became a key player in American scientific research in the early 20th century and made major contributions to the U.S. effort in World War II.

Caltech’s 124-acre campus, close to Old Town Pasadena and the Pasadena Playhouse District, provides a vibrant setting with social events, clubs, and recreational facilities. The Caltech Beavers compete in 13 intercollegiate sports, with the beaver symbolizing the school’s focus on engineering. Cultural activities like music, theater, and visual arts also thrive on campus, supporting Caltech’s mission to “educate outstanding students to become creative members of society.” The Athenaeum, a grand central building, hosts both formal and informal gatherings for dining, meetings, and events.
