Overview

Kanazawa University, one of Japan's esteemed National Universities, traces its origins back to 1862 with the establishment of a smallpox vaccination center. Initially a regional clinic founded by the Kaga Domain, it is now the third oldest national university in Japan and a leading institution for higher education in the Hokuriku Region.

The university’s main campus, once situated within the Kanazawa Castle grounds, now spans 496 acres on a mountain to the east of the historic city of Kanazawa, which lies on the Sea of Japan. The campus is just two-and-a-half hours by bullet train from Tokyo.

Kanazawa University is committed to its mission as a research-focused institution that prioritizes education while actively engaging with both local and global communities.
