The origins of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) date back to 1952 when it was established as Beijing College of Geology. It became a national key university in 1960. In 1970, the institution moved to Hubei Province and was renamed Hubei College of Geology. By 1975, the college relocated to Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei, and was renamed Wuhan College of Geology. In 1987, with approval from the State Education Commission, China University of Geosciences (CUG) was officially founded in both Wuhan and Beijing, with Wuhan as the main headquarters. In 1997, CUG became part of the national "211 Project" for leading universities. The administration of the university was transferred to the Ministry of Education in 2000, and it was one of the first institutions to join the national "Double First-Class Program," aimed at building world-class universities and disciplines.

CUG (Wuhan) is located near the national high-tech development zone and China Optical Valley, with the picturesque East Lake nearby. The university's Yifu Science and Technology Museum is the only national 4A-level scenic spot among all Chinese universities.

In the US News Best Global Universities 2024 rankings, it holds the 221st position globally. The university is also ranked between 801 and 1000 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022. Notably, in the field of Geosciences, CUG (Wuhan) stands as the second-best institution in China.
