Overview

Higher education in France boasts a rich tradition of excellence, dating back to the establishment of the first universities in the Middle Ages. Since the Napoleonic era, the highly centralised university system has undergone significant transformations, including increased university autonomy, the democratisation of higher education, and the integration of an academic Europe, aligning it more closely with systems in other countries.

The University of Rennes 1, located in the Academy of Rennes, was established in 1969 as part of the 1968 educational reform. This state university is public and has a scientific, cultural, and professional orientation. It offers a wide variety of multidisciplinary programmes, including science and technology, health, mathematics, life and environmental sciences, medicine, pharmaceutical and biological sciences, dentistry, business, and management. Additionally, the university serves as a hub for multidisciplinary research, earning recognition from experts across the nation. Currently, it hosts 43 research teams, with 26 affiliated or contracted with major national research organisations: 21 units linked to the CNRS, one to the INRA, and four to the INSERM.

The University of Rennes 1 holds a strong position in global university rankings. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, it is placed within the 601–800 range, while in the QS World University Rankings 2025, it ranks between 721–730. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2024, it is in the 401–500 bracket, and the U.S. News Best Global Universities 2024 ranks it at 479 globally. These rankings highlight the university's achievements in teaching quality, research output, and international engagement.
