Overview

The University of Cincinnati, founded in 1819 with the establishment of Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio, became the University of Cincinnati in 1870 when the City of Cincinnati established it and incorporated these earlier institutions. In 1906, it pioneered the first cooperative education program in the United States through its College of Engineering. For many years, it was the second-oldest and second-largest municipal university in the country. In 1968, the university transitioned into a "municipally sponsored, state-affiliated" institution, ultimately becoming one of Ohio's state universities on July 1, 1977. Recognized as a Research Extensive University by the Carnegie Commission, the University of Cincinnati is ranked among America's Top 25 public research universities.
