Established in 1925 as a tribute to Newfoundland's fallen soldiers, Memorial University College was granted degree-awarding status in 1949. That same year, when Newfoundland joined Canada as a province, the newly formed government enacted An Act Respecting the Memorial University of Newfoundland. This legislation defines the university’s role, responsibilities, structure, and governance as the province's sole university. Today, Memorial University serves approximately 19,000 students across undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in a variety of disciplines.
The university emphasises student-focused and experiential learning, delivered through diverse methods and settings. Memorial's main campuses are located in St. John's and Corner Brook in Newfoundland, Happy Valley-Goose Bay in Labrador, and Harlow in England. Additionally, it offers a wide range of online courses and programs. Governed through a bicameral system, the university has a Senate responsible for academic matters and a Board of Regents overseeing other affairs. The institution is led by its president and vice-chancellor, supported by an administrative leadership team.
