Founded in 1982, the University of Rome Tor Vergata is situated on a 600-hectare campus in the southeastern part of Rome. The university currently offers 106 graduate programs, including Bachelor's, Master's, and One-cycle degrees, as well as 32 PhD courses. Among these, there are 18 international programs: 15 are taught in English, and 3 are in Italian with English curricula. Additionally, there are 25 international PhD courses: 22 are taught in English, and 3 are multilingual.
In terms of research, the university’s 18 departments and 48 interdisciplinary research centers are involved in both fundamental and applied research across a variety of fields. Tor Vergata is a member of the European University Association (EUA), representing universities and national rectors' conferences in 47 European countries. It is also part of three key networks: YERUN (Young European Research Universities Network), which promotes research and teaching collaborations such as dual degrees and student exchanges among young European universities with an international presence; VIU (Venice International University), offering students an exchange semester in Venice to study globalisation-related topics through interdisciplinary learning; and UNICA (Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe), founded in 1990, comprising 46 universities from 35 European capitals, with a collective staff of over 150,000 and 1.8 million students.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 places it between 301st and 350th globally. According to U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities 2021, it is ranked 243rd globally, 106th in Europe, and 12th in Italy. The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2024 ranks the university 362nd globally, positioning it in the top 1.8% of universities worldwide.
