Zhengzhou University was founded on July 10, 2000, following the merger of three former institutions: the original Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou University of Technology, and Henan Medical University. The original Zhengzhou University, established in 1956, was the first comprehensive university founded by the state. Zhengzhou University of Technology, founded in 1963, was a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Chemical Engineering. Henan Medical University, founded in 1928, was a key medical institution under the administration of Henan Province.
Zhengzhou University offers a broad range of academic disciplines, covering 12 fields of study, including science, engineering, medicine, literature, history, philosophy, law, economics, management, education, agriculture, and the arts. It is a part of Project 211 and the only university in Henan supported by the Midwest Universities Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project, a joint initiative of the Henan Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education. The university includes 46 faculties and 9 affiliated hospitals, offering a diverse range of academic programs: 107 undergraduate degrees, 55 first-level master's programs, 237 second-level master's programs, 21 first-level doctorate programs, 124 second-level doctorate programs, 1 professional doctorate, 19 professional master's programs, and 23 postdoctoral research stations.
Zhengzhou University (ZZU) has earned recognition in several international rankings, reflecting its growing academic and research reputation. In the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities (2024), it is ranked 213 globally. The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (2024) places ZZU in the 601–800 bracket worldwide, with strong subject rankings in Clinical and Health, Engineering, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The university is also ranked 511 in the QS World University Rankings (2025). These rankings highlight Zhengzhou University's commitment to excellence in education and research across various fields.
