In 1665, Herzog Christian-Albrecht von Holstein-Gottorf established a university in response to the need for educated individuals to serve the state, following the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War. Initially, the university, named after the duke, enrolled 140 students across the faculties of Theology, Law, Medicine, and Philosophy. Today, with over 20,000 students, the university has expanded its offerings to include economics, natural sciences, agriculture, engineering, and educational sciences. Located in the former workplace of Max Planck and Heinrich Hertz, the university boasts a faculty of 600 members who teach students from Germany and over 100 other countries. Kiel University is the only institution in Schleswig-Holstein to offer a broad range of subjects to meet the educational needs of local school-leavers while maintaining a strong academic profile and a commitment to competing both nationally and internationally.
