Chongqing University (CQU) was established in 1929 with the vision of becoming a "well-equipped and influential university." By the 1940s, it had grown into a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of disciplines, including liberal arts, science, engineering, business, law, and medicine. Following a nationwide reorganization of higher education in 1952, CQU was restructured as a multidisciplinary university with a strong focus on engineering. In 1960, it was recognized as a national key university.
With China's Reform and Opening-up, the university underwent extensive restoration, adjustment, and development, evolving into a leading higher education institution centered on engineering while incorporating diverse disciplines. In 1998, it was designated as a key university under the state’s “Project 211,” and in 2000, Chongqing Jianzhu University and Chongqing Architecture Junior College merged with CQU, forming the new Chongqing University. In 2001, it became a key university under the national “Project 985.” Later, in 2017, it was included in the “Class-A University” category of the National World-Class University Development Program, and in 2022, it was recognized as a “Double First-Class University” in the second round of assessments. These milestones mark its journey toward becoming a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.
Currently, CQU offers programs across 11 academic categories: science, engineering, economics, management, law, literature, history, philosophy, medicine, education, and art. It has seven faculties, 35 schools, and seven affiliated hospitals. The university employs over 5,300 faculty and staff members and has a student population exceeding 50,000, including more than 24,000 postgraduates and 26,000 undergraduates. The campuses span over 5,300 mu (approximately 883 acres) and include Campus A, Campus B, Campus C, Huxi Campus, and Liangjiang Campus.
