Overview

Since January 1, 2009, the University of Strasbourg was formed from the merger of three universities: Louis Pasteur, Marc Bloch, and Robert Schuman. This new university now stands as a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of higher education programs. It is the largest university in France, with a student body of 41,058, including 20.5% international students, and a staff of 4,635 permanent employees. The university encompasses 37 faculties, schools, and institutes, as well as 86 research labs and centers. Strasbourg is highly research-focused, submitting nearly 400 doctoral theses each year. The university is spread across four main sites and numerous additional locations throughout the Alsace region, occupying more than 110 buildings and 80 hectares of land. Furthermore, it maintains close academic ties with other institutions in the Upper Rhine region, including those in Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, and Mulhouse.

Ranking

As of 2025, the University of Strasbourg ranks 456th in the QS World University Rankings, a slight decline from its 421st position in 2024​. Despite this drop, the university remains a strong institution in Europe, with a significant focus on research and a high international student population. It is ranked 24th globally in specific subject areas, showcasing its strength in certain fields.
