The origin of the campus traces back to 1907 when the California State Legislature founded the Citrus Experiment Station to research agricultural challenges in Southern California. Graduate education was integrated into the station's activities early on, and it became central to its mission. In 1948, the Regents approved the formation of the College of Letters and Science, which officially began classes in 1954. In 1959, the Riverside campus was designated as a general campus, tasked with developing academic programs. The Graduate Division was formed in 1960, marking the beginning of graduate and professional programs at the university.
