Overview

Shandong University (SDU) stands as one of China’s oldest and most prestigious universities, established in 1901. It holds the distinction of being the nation’s second national university, following Jingshi University (the Metropolitan University). Recognised by the Ministry of Education as a "national key comprehensive university," SDU was included among 21 national key first-class universities in 2001.

Located in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, the university spans a massive area of 3.849 square kilometers. This region is known for its economic significance and cultural heritage, being the cradle of Qilu culture and a historically vibrant contributor to Chinese civilization.

SDU comprises 31 schools and colleges, offering programs across 11 academic disciplines, including philosophy, law, economics, literature, natural sciences, and engineering. The university boasts 104 undergraduate programs, 209 master’s programs, 127 doctoral programs, and 15 postdoctoral stations. Its vibrant academic community includes around 95,000 students, with over 1,000 international students.

The university is well-equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities, including 35 national and provincial key academic disciplines, 2 national key research laboratories, and 20 provincial and ministerial labs. Its faculty includes 922 professors and 29 academicians affiliated with prestigious academies. SDU is also home to three general hospitals and 12 teaching hospitals, adding strength to its medical programs.

Internationally, SDU has cultivated partnerships with over 70 universities in 50 countries and maintains active collaborations with more than 100 global institutions. It has hosted over 10,000 international students from 60 countries since 1980, solidifying its position as a leading global education hub.
