Overview

Keio University operates six campuses across the Greater Tokyo area, strategically located to cater to diverse academic and lifestyle needs. Three of these campuses—Mita, Shinanomachi, and Shiba-Kyoritsu—are situated in central Tokyo, a city consistently ranked among the best for students globally by QS Best Student Cities. The Mita and Shiba-Kyoritsu campuses are conveniently located near the iconic Tokyo Tower. The remaining campuses, Hiyoshi, Yagami, and Shonan Fujisawa, are in Kanagawa Prefecture, offering a tranquil and cosmopolitan environment outside Tokyo’s bustling cityscape.

The Shinanomachi Campus houses the School of Medicine and Keio University Hospital, a premier institution known for cutting-edge medical care. It also hosts the prestigious Keio Medical Science Prize, regarded as a precursor to the Nobel Prize. Esteemed recipients include Nobel laureates Dr. Jules A. Hoffmann (2012), Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi (2015), and Dr. Tasuku Honjo (2016).

Founded in 1858, Keio University is Japan's oldest private institution, established by Yukichi Fukuzawa. Fukuzawa, an influential reformist, aimed to modernize Japan by fostering talented individuals for both public and private sectors, contributing to the country's transformation from a feudal society to a modern nation-state.
