Overview

Hokkaido University, established in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College, was Japan's first higher education institution to grant bachelor’s degrees. The famous phrase "Boys, be ambitious!" was famously delivered by Dr. William S. Clark, the first Vice-Principal, and continues to inspire the youth of Japan, embodying the university's motto. Over its long history of more than 130 years, Hokkaido University has adopted the core principles of "The Frontier Spirit," "Global Perspectives," "All-round Education," and "Practical Learning," which have guided its educational and research endeavors. Today, the university continues to foster a collaborative environment where faculty, students, and alumni work together to make the campus a global center for education and research.

In the 2025 QS World University Rankings, Hokkaido University is placed at 173rd globally, making it the 8th ranked university in Japan​. Additionally, it holds a position in the 351-400 range in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025.​
