China | Wuhan, China (Mainland)
Wuhan University, established in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Hubei and Hunan during the late Qing Dynasty, is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. Initially founded with six colleges — liberal arts, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture, and medicine — the university expanded over time. In 2000, it underwent significant transformation through the amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University, marking a new chapter in its development. This unification brought together a diverse array of academic disciplines and research capabilities, solidifying Wuhan University's position in higher education.
For 2025, Wuhan University is ranked 134th globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and holds a position of 194th in the QS World University Rankings.
