Overview

Founded in 1911, Kyushu University is a prominent research-driven institution located in Fukuoka, Japan, a city historically recognized as the gateway to Asia due to its geographical closeness to the continent. In 2011, the university celebrated its centenary and is now ambitiously moving forward into its second century of academic excellence. With nearly 20,000 students, Kyushu University comprises 12 undergraduate schools, 18 graduate schools, 17 faculties, and over 50 research centers, including five research institutes and a hospital.

The university also launched the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation in 2018. Its international student body of over 2,200 students from around 100 countries emphasizes the university’s commitment to global engagement. Additionally, the Ito Campus, designed with cutting-edge facilities, focuses on the development of next-generation technologies while prioritizing the preservation of the natural environment, green spaces, and historical remains, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between innovation and nature.

Kyushu University has secured strong positions in various global rankings for 2025. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is placed within the 301-350 range, marking it as one of Japan's top universities, particularly excelling in industry and innovation​. Similarly, in the QS World University Rankings, it ranks 167th globally, placing it in the top 15% of universities worldwide and seventh in Japan​. These rankings reflect Kyushu University's significant contributions to research, education, and international collaboration.
