Overview

Nanjing University, one of China’s premier comprehensive universities, operates under the Ministry of Education. Located in the historic city of Nanjing, known as the capital of six ancient Chinese dynasties, the university’s roots trace back to 1902 with the establishment of Sanjiang Normal School. Over time, it evolved through various stages, including Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, and National Central University, before being renamed Nanjing University in 1950.

In 1952, during a national reorganization of universities, Nanjing University merged with the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences of the University of Nanking, established in 1888. This move solidified its standing as a leading institution. The university operates across two campuses, Gulou and Pukou, covering nearly 600 acres and featuring modern teaching and research facilities. Celebrating its anniversary on May 20 each year, Nanjing University holds a significant place in Chinese history, contributing to movements like the May 4th Youth Democratic Movement in 1919 and the early spread of Marxism in the 1920s.

Today, Nanjing University is recognized for its academic excellence, vibrant campus life, and pivotal role in shaping Chinese education and society. Its current president, Professor Jiang Shusheng, continues to guide its legacy of innovation and national significance.
