Overview

Established in 1911, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest institution of higher education in Hong Kong, renowned for its outstanding achievements in teaching, research, and innovation on a global scale.

HKU is ranked 4th in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings and 31st in the World University Rankings. It has also earned recognition as the world’s most international university, a title based on metrics such as international student and staff representation, global co-authorship, and international reputation according to THE.

As a research-driven institution, HKU consistently secures a leading share of competitive government research funding. Its dedication to fostering global partnerships is evident in its collaborations with prestigious international institutions through research projects, joint doctoral programs, and visiting professorships. In 2022, 38 HKU academics were included in Clarivate’s “Highly Cited Researchers” list, further underscoring its research excellence.

HKU comprises 10 academic faculties, where English is the primary medium of instruction. These faculties include Architecture, Arts, Business and Economics, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine (Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), Science, and Social Sciences.
