Overview

When the University of Melbourne was founded in 1853, it began as a small collection of buildings in a vast park on the outskirts of the city, with just four professors and 16 students. Today, it stands at the heart of a vibrant international city, consistently ranked among the world’s top universities and number one in Australia.

With a dedicated team of over 8,000 academic and professional staff, the university supports a diverse student body of around 65,000, including 30,000 international students from more than 130 countries. The University of Melbourne counts four Australian prime ministers and five governors-general among its alumni, and is located in the city known as Australia’s “cultural capital.”

Melbourne itself has earned the title of the World’s Most Livable City seven times, as awarded by The Economist. It is also a UNESCO City of Literature, the birthplace of Australian rules football, and a thriving hub for street art, music, and theatre.

The University of Melbourne consistently ranks among the top institutions globally and is considered the best in Australia. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, it holds the 13th position globally, showcasing its strong international presence and academic excellence​. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, the university is placed 39th​. Additionally, the US News & World Report ranks it 27th among global universities in 2025​.
