Overview

The University of Galway, also known as Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, was established in 1845 as Queen’s College, Galway. It later became part of the National University of Ireland as University College, Galway. In 1997, under the Universities Act, its name was updated to the National University of Ireland, Galway, before rebranding in 2022 as the University of Galway – Ollscoil na Gaillimhe.

Uniquely, the institution has a mandate to promote the Irish language as a working language within the university.

The university comprises five colleges: the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies; the College of Business, Public Policy, and Law; the College of Engineering and Informatics; the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences; and the College of Science.

Student life at the University of Galway is vibrant, with over 110 active societies and 50+ sports clubs. Among its traditions, the Literary and Debating Society, founded in 1846, stands as the oldest society on campus.
