Overview

The University of Roehampton, located on a spacious parkland campus in southwest London, became an independent institution in 2004, though its roots trace back to four teacher training colleges established in the 19th century. Each student at Roehampton is associated with one of these founding colleges. The university boasts a diverse international community, with 8,000 students representing 110 different countries. While teacher training remains a key area of expertise, Roehampton is also renowned for its programs in Dance, Biological Anthropology, Drama, and English Literature. Additionally, the Swiss Glion Institute of Higher Education offers courses in hospitality, and the university has recently expanded into online business and medical programs.

Ranking

The University of Roehampton ranks 118th in the Times University Guide 2025 and 110th in the Guardian University Guide 2025. It also holds the 164th position in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024. The REF2021 results revealed that 77% of the university's research was rated as "world-leading" or "internationally excellent," marking an 11% improvement since 2014. Roehampton has been acknowledged as the best modern university in the UK for research and the highest-ranked modern university in London. Its research quality ranking has also improved, now sitting at 51st in the country, a nine-place jump from the REF2014 results.
