The University of Sunderland, founded in 1901 as Sunderland Technical College, gained university status in 1992. It operates four campuses, including two in Sunderland, one in London focused on business, tourism, and nursing, and a new campus in Hong Kong. The university is renowned for its significant contributions to medical education, having established a new medical school in 2018, one of only five in the UK at that time, to address the regional disparity in medical education. The proportion of research classified as world-leading or internationally excellent doubled since the previous REF in 2014. Additionally, Sunderland’s Grade Point Average (GPA) for research quality showed a marked improvement, highlighting the university's progress in academic research.
