Overview

Founded in 1846, the University at Buffalo is a prominent research institution situated in upstate New York, near the Canadian border. As the largest institution in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, it serves about 20,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduate and professional students. The student-to-faculty ratio for undergraduates is 13:1.

The university operates across three campuses: the North Campus, located in Amherst, which primarily houses undergraduate programs; the South Campus in Buffalo, with its historic buildings; and the Downtown Campus, which focuses on medical research.

Buffalo offers over 100 undergraduate programs, more than 200 master’s degrees, 84 doctoral degrees, and 10 professional degrees. It is organized into 13 schools and colleges, including the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Law, and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Graduate Division.

Notable alumni include NASA astronauts, Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, CEOs, and renowned artists. The faculty has earned prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, and National Medals of Science and Technology. The university’s athletic teams, known as the "Bulls," are supported by their mascot, Victor E Bull.

According to U.S. News & World Report (2024), UB holds the 38th position for public universities and is ranked 76th overall in the national universities category, which includes both public and private institutions​. Additionally, it ranks highly in several specific fields, including 35th for undergraduate engineering programs among public universities​ In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025, UB is placed in the 251–300 range globally
