Stony Brook University (SBU) is one of New York State’s four major public universities, located on Long Island, about 60 miles east of New York City. As a prominent public research institution, it holds sea and space grants and is a member of the Association of American Universities. Additionally, it is one of only 10 universities in the United States recognized by the National Science Foundation for its combination of research and undergraduate education.
With approximately 25,000 students, SBU encompasses 13 schools and colleges, including the Graduate School and the Honors College. Its School of Health Sciences includes five professional schools—Dental Medicine, Nursing, Social Welfare, Medicine, and Health Technology and Management—serving around 3,000 students.
The main campus, situated on Long Island’s North Shore, spans over 1,000 acres and includes academic buildings, an 8,300-seat stadium, sports complex, and Stony Brook Medicine, the university hospital. There are also two satellite campuses, one in midtown Manhattan and another in Southampton.
Around 83% of undergraduates live on campus, which offers a variety of residence halls and apartment-style buildings. The university’s libraries are highly regarded, with the main library being a member of the Association of Research Libraries and the Health Sciences Center Library part of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries.
As of 2024, Stony Brook University (SBU) is ranked within the top 350 universities globally by Times Higher Education (THE), with its research capabilities, particularly in health sciences and engineering, being a key highlight. U.S. News & World Report places SBU in the range of 150-200 among national universities, underscoring its academic rigor and research strengths. In the QS World University Rankings, SBU is recognized for its research output and international collaborations, although it typically falls in the 396 globally. These rankings reflect the university's growing reputation, especially in the fields of STEM and health sciences.
