The University of Florida (UF) is a prominent public research university, known for its academic diversity and broad range of programs. UF's origins date back to 1853 when the state-supported East Florida Seminary took control of the Kingsbury Academy in Ocala. The seminary moved to Gainesville in the 1860s and later merged with the Florida Agricultural College in Lake City. In 1905, it became a university by legislative action and relocated to Gainesville, with its first classes held in 1906 with 102 students. The university opened its doors to women in 1947. Today, with over 50,000 students, UF ranks as one of the five largest universities in the country.
