Originally established over 160 years ago as the Plymouth School of Navigation, the University has a legacy of equipping students with essential skills, resilience, and hands-on experience for thriving careers.

In 2023, Plymouth was among a select few UK universities to achieve a prestigious triple Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. This follows its success in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, where 78% of research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, with nine subject areas achieving 100% in the highest impact categories. As one of the first UK universities verified as carbon neutral, Plymouth continues to invest in sustainable development and infrastructure.

The University has received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education three times, most recently for its groundbreaking research on microplastic pollution. Regularly ranked among global leaders in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, Plymouth is home to over 18,000 students on campus, with an additional 7,000 studying at partner institutions worldwide and a network of nearly 200,000 alumni pursuing impactful careers across the globe.

Ranked 70th in the Times University Guide 2025, 84th in the Guardian University Guide 2025, and 92nd in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024, the University of Plymouth is recognised as a top institution for modern education. It is ranked among the top 40 global modern universities by the Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 and stands out as one of the UK’s leading green universities in the latest People & Planet Green League.

In the REF 2021, 78% of the University’s submissions were rated as world-leading (4) or internationally excellent (3), marking a significant improvement from 63% in the previous REF 2014. This highlights the University’s growing reputation for research excellence and impactful contributions across disciplines.
