Overview

Heriot-Watt University, founded in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world's first mechanics institute, is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. It became a university in 1966 by Royal Charter. Over a third of its 7,000 students on the Edinburgh campus come from outside the UK, and the University’s global focus is reflected in its 10,000 international students from 150 countries enrolled in its programmes. Heriot-Watt operates multiple campuses, including three in Scotland, and additional campuses in Malaysia and Dubai. The University received an award from the Scottish Council of Development and Industry for its international orientation and excels in fields like physical sciences, mathematics, business and management, engineering, and the built environment. In 2018, it was awarded 'International University of the Year' by Times Higher Education. Additionally, 95% of Heriot-Watt’s first-degree graduates secure employment or continue their studies within six months of graduation, and it ranks as the number one university in Scotland for the highest paid salaries, according to Times Higher Education.

Heriot-Watt University is ranked 51st in the Times University Guide 2025, 66th in the Guardian University Guide 2025, and 256th in the QS World University Rankings 2025. According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), 97% of the University’s physics research is rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, while 96% of its engineering research, submitted jointly with the University of Edinburgh, holds the same distinction for quality.
