Overview

Queen Margaret University is a modern institution situated in Musselburgh, near Edinburgh, Scotland. It is Scotland’s first university founded in the 21st century and currently has around 6,500 students from over 70 countries. QMU is renowned for its strengths in creativity and culture, business, and health. The university offers the widest range of health degrees in Scotland, including programs in health psychology, audiology, and diabetes care, while also holding a global reputation for speech sciences. Ninety-three percent of Queen Margaret graduates find employment or pursue further study within six months of completing their degrees. At the heart of the QMU campus is an innovative learning resource centre, equipped with a mix of IT and library facilities and a variety of flexible learning spaces. Additionally, QMU is the first Scottish university to feature an on-campus Business Gateway, which is managed by East Lothian Council and located within QMU’s Business Innovation Zone.

Ranking

Queen Margaret University is ranked 105th in the Times University Guide 2025 and 91st in the Guardian University Guide 2025. According to the results from the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), the University is producing research with significant global reach and impact. Expert peer review panels from REF 2021 confirmed that QMU has world-leading or internationally excellent research across all the Units of Assessment to which the University submitted work.
