Edinburgh Napier University, which gained full university status in June 1992, currently enrols approximately 12,500 students. Primarily situated in Edinburgh’s east end, its campus buildings range from historic castles to former schools. Renowned as one of Scotland’s top universities for graduate employability, the University integrates work placements into many of its courses. It is particularly respected for film education, delivered in collaboration with the Edinburgh College of Art.
Through international partnerships, around 3,000 students pursue Edinburgh Napier degrees in Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, with dual-degree opportunities available in partnership with New York State University, allowing students to complete a four-year programme across both institutions. Edinburgh Napier is ranked eighth in the UK for ‘value added,’ which evaluates the progression from students' entry qualifications to their final degree outcomes. Additionally, the University offers the ‘Confident Futures’ programme, which focuses on enhancing employability skills.
Edinburgh Napier University is ranked 59th in the Times University Guide 2025 and 96th in the Guardian University Guide 2025, while holding the 133rd position in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024. It was also recognised as the top modern university in Scotland for research impact in the REF 2021. The proportion of the University’s research classified as “internationally excellent” or “world-leading” has risen significantly, increasing from 53% in 2014 to 68% in the latest assessment.
