Overview

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has a long-standing mission to support women in their academic and professional pursuits. One of their flagship programs, the AAUW International Fellowship, is designed to empower women from around the world by providing financial assistance for graduate and postgraduate studies in the United States. Established in 1917, this fellowship program continues to make a significant impact by opening doors for women from diverse backgrounds to study and contribute to academic and professional fields worldwide.

Who Can Apply?

• Applicants must be or identify as a woman.
• Fellowship recipients must be non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
• Applicants must be pursuing their first master’s, professional or academic doctorate degree. Examples of master’s and professional degrees include but are not limited to J.D., M.F.A., L.L.M., M.Arch., or medical degrees such as M.D., D.D.S., etc. Examples of academic doctorate degrees include but are not limited to Ph.D. or Ed.D.
• Applicants must hold an academic degree (earned in the U.S. or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Applicants must pursue their study in the U.S. on a full-time basis at an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Applicants must reside in the country of their studies for the duration of the fellowship period.
• Applicants intending to study in another country other than their own or the U.S. must be members of Graduate Women International. (Foreign branches of U.S. institutions are considered outside of the U.S.)
• Applicants interested in pursuing postdoctoral studies are encouraged to consider AAUW’s International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.

Application Procedure

Applicants must complete the AAUW International Fellowships application and access the same from the foundation’s official website.

The AAUW International Fellowships application form will comprise of the following components:

• Fulfilling the eligibility criteria.
• Applicant’s name as mentioned in the passport
• Recommendations: Two letters of recommendation from professors or professional colleagues

Along with the form, applicants have to submit documents listed below:

• Academic Transcripts with certified English translation
• Proof of bachelor’s degree (postdoctoral applicants only)
• An official report of TOEFL Test Score or the waiver request,
• Letter of Admission: The applicant will upload a letter of admission from the proposed institution of study or research
• Resume

What Financial Support is Available?

• International Fellowships carry a stipend of $20,000 for master’s or professional degree and $25,000 for an academic doctorate degree.
• Stipends are payable to fellows only and are disbursed in two equal payments at the beginning and the midpoint of the fellowship term.
