The Marshall Scholarship is one of the most prestigious academic scholarships for American students, offering them the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in the United Kingdom. Established in 1953, it honours the legacy of the Marshall Plan, recognising the lasting friendship between the UK and the United States. Each year, around 40 to 50 scholars are selected, though the number can vary based on funding.
The Marshall Scholarship supports talented, academically outstanding US citizens to study at any university in the UK. Unlike other scholarships which may limit options to certain institutions, Marshall Scholars have the freedom to choose from any recognised UK university, whether they wish to pursue one-year or two-year postgraduate degrees in any discipline.
Candidates are responsible for completing the online application form and submitting it through the system to their undergraduate institution. The institution will then ensure that the application is complete and make a decision whether they wish to endorse the application or not. If the Institution elects to endorse the application, they will add a letter of endorsement on behalf of the candidate and will then submit it through the system to the appropriate regional committee. Candidates are advised to contact their undergraduate institution as soon as possible if they are considering applying for a Marshall Scholarship.
