The Victoria University of Wellington Doctoral Scholarship is open to both domestic and international students who demonstrate exceptional academic potential and a clear commitment to research. The scholarship aims to attract and support the best and brightest researchers, providing them with the resources they need to excel in their studies.

Who Can Apply?

• Applications for the Victoria University of Wellington Doctoral Scholarship are open to those eligible at the time of applying or expected to be eligible within three months. Applicants should typically hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with distinction, equivalent to a First Class Honours degree from a New Zealand university.
• The scholarship will lapse if the recipient does not secure full enrolment within 15 months. Academic staff at any university cannot hold the scholarship while employed.
• The University Research Scholarships Committee awards scholarships based on academic merit, for up to three years. If a recipient submits their thesis during the tenure, stipends will cease one month after submission. For students enrolled for more than six months before the offer, tenure may be reduced.
• Recipients must sign a scholarship contract, with the supervisor and administrative supervisor, agreeing to the terms. Scholarships typically begin within six months for domestic students and nine months for international students, though deferments may be granted for valid reasons.
• Tuition fees are covered upon registration, and recipients must inform the Faculty of Graduate Research of other awards. Co-tenure with other awards exceeding one-third of the stipend value may reduce the scholarship. Faculty Research Grants are exempt from this.
• Recipients must remain enrolled full-time and focus on their research. Domestic students may apply for part-time enrolment on a pro-rata basis if necessary, and up to 600 hours of paid work per year may be approved with support from supervisors.
• Recipients must submit progress reports every six months. The Committee may terminate or suspend the scholarship if progress is unsatisfactory, or terms and conditions are breached. Terms may be adjusted to prevent hardship or misuse of funds, and are subject to review.

Application Procedure

Applications  for admission as a PhD student and for Victoria Doctoral Scholarships should be made online. All applicants will need to provide:

• A 2000- word sample of their academic writing in English;
• Copies of their academic transcript/ and degree certifiates;
• A copy of their Diploma Supplement (applicants from EU countries only).

International students must provide:

• Evidence of English language proficiency;
• Translations of official documents (certified by an accredited translator).

Can apply for the scholarships three rounds each year closing 1 March, 1 July and 1 November.

What Financial Support is Available?

• All offers of Wellington Doctoral Scholarships consist of a $30,500 per annum stipend plus domestic tuition fees for up to three years.
