Overview

The Edinburgh Futures Institute is delighted to announce the opening of applications for its Visiting Fellowship programme for the 2025/26 academic year. This vibrant academic setting offers fellows the opportunity to engage with other visiting scholars, researchers affiliated with the Institute, business and third-sector partners, as well as students. Fellows will have the chance to participate in seminars, events, and training courses, ensuring a deeply enriching and collaborative experience.

The Edinburgh Futures Institute fosters collaborative, data-driven, and interdisciplinary research innovation across the University of Edinburgh, focusing on six key areas:

• Creative Industries and Digital Humanities
• Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence
• Financial Services and Fintech
• Future Infrastructure
• Public Sector: Prevention, Data Civics, Participatory Democracy, and Governance
• Tourism and Festivals

Who Can Apply?

• Applicants must hold an open-ended position within an academic institution or equivalent professional qualifications.
• Preference is given to applicants from low-and-middle-income countries or underrepresented minorities.
• Applicants should be engaged in projects related to the key research areas of the Futures Institute.
• Experience in leadership roles within research projects and the potential for significant societal impact is crucial.
• Fellows should have well-defined plans to contribute actively to the Futures Institute and the broader academic community.

Application Procedure

• Applicants must identify and connect with an academic sponsor at the University of Edinburgh who will act as their primary point of contact.
• The application process is online. Ensure you carefully fill out the application form and provide all necessary details.
• The application deadline for the Edinburgh Visiting Fellowship Program 2025 is January 23, 2025.

What Financial Support is Available?

• A £1,500 per month stipend to cover relocation expenses.
• Reimbursement for travel and visa costs.

Other Details

Visits are expected to last 3-6 months, and must take place within an academic semester. Successful applicants will be expected to make a contribution to the local research community, through guest lectures or seminars, collaborating on grant proposals, or contributing to teaching. 

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Proven leadership in research and engagement through current or past projects, in line with the applicant's career stage.
• Existing research connections with academic sponsors and the broader Edinburgh research community.
• The potential impact of the research proposal and its relevance to society.
• Plans to actively participate in and contribute to the Futures Institute and the wider academic community in Edinburgh.

The fellowship duration ranges from three to six months, with the opportunity to participate in either Semester 1 (September 2025 – February 2026) or Semester 2 (January 2026 – June 2026).
