The John Loiello Scholarship, initially established by the American Friends of SOAS (AFSOAS) in honour of alumnus and founding Board member John Loiello, is once again offering a remarkable opportunity for U.S. students. With the generous support of a private donor and International Student House (ISH), the scholarship has been reintroduced for the 2025-26 academic year. This prestigious award offers a life-changing opportunity for one lucky American student to pursue a full-time, one-year taught Master’s programme at the esteemed SOAS University of London.

Who Can Apply?

• Hold an unconditional or conditional offer for a full-time, one-year taught Master’s programme at SOAS by the scholarship panel stage.
• Not have previously earned a Master’s degree.
• Be a resident of the United States.
• Have graduated from a U.S. high school and obtained an undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university.
• Maintain an unweighted GPA of at least 3.50 in their undergraduate studies.
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Clearly outline how they intend to contribute to SOAS, both as a student and as an alum.

Step 1: Apply for your programme

Step 2: Apply for the scholarship 

You must apply for this scholarship by 12:00 PM (midday UK local time) on 7 February 2025 via the online scholarship application form. 

What Financial Support is Available?

• This award covers tuition fees in full and accommodation is generously provided by the International Students House (ISH). This accommodation will consist of a standard single room with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities, and free brunch at weekends.

Other Details

Candidate assessment 

• Candidate evaluation will be based on the details provided in both the scholarship and admission applications to SOAS. The selection panel will consider factors such as undergraduate GPA, financial need, statement of intent, and any other relevant information.
• The assessment will be conducted by a Selection Panel composed of three academic members, who will evaluate the quality of each application.
• Applicants are only required to disclose information they are comfortable sharing. There is no expectation to disclose challenging experiences or personal details that are not relevant to the scholarship application.
