Overview

Since its inception in 2005, MESPOM has equipped students with the skills to address complex environmental sustainability challenges, particularly within an international framework. The program offers a multi-disciplinary curriculum that encourages students to combine theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring thorough analysis and effective management of environmental issues in various social contexts. Beyond academics, students develop essential research, communication, and other cross-functional skills, while engaging with real-world practices across business, government, non-profits, and academia. They also gain insight into European and global networks of environmental professionals, preparing them with strategic career development.

MESPOM's network of partners delivers a unified program, offering diverse geographic perspectives (including Scandinavian, Mediterranean, and British) alongside complementary professional skills in policy, management, and science. The program connects students to academic and professional networks across nine countries on four continents, thanks to its 11 Associated Partners. MESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree supported by the Erasmus Mundus program of the European Commission.

Who Can Apply?

• A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Policy, or a related field.
• Strong academic records showcasing excellence.
• Proficiency in English (language certifications may be required).
• Relevant work or research experience in environmental topics (an advantage).
• A demonstrated motivation to pursue a career in environmental science and policy.

Other Details

The MESPOM program, spanning 24 months and earning students 120 ECTS credits, offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum.

• Year 1:

  • Fall and Winter Terms: Hosted by Central European University (CEU) in Vienna, this phase begins with an introductory module followed by advanced elective courses addressing contemporary environmental sustainability challenges and essential cross-disciplinary skills.
  • Spring Term: Held at the University of the Aegean in Lesvos, Greece, this term focuses on environmental science topics such as land, water, and ecosystem management, as well as sustainable tourism.
  • Summer: Students undertake internships, guided by MESPOM faculty, with associated partners or other organisations.

• Year 2:

  • Fall Term: Students choose between the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden) for a focus on Environment, Industry, and Products or the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester (UK) for Environment and Pollution Control.
  • Thesis Term: The final term is dedicated to thesis work at any Consortium partner institution, selected based on the student’s academic and career interests.

Throughout the program, students engage with advanced topics, including sustainable energy and climate change, biodiversity and conservation, urban sustainability, sustainable consumption and production, and environmental security and justice.
