Overview

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowship program is a significant initiative dedicated to supporting women scientists who are breaking barriers in various scientific fields. Launched in 2003, this program aims to recognize the outstanding achievements of women in science, help them advance their careers, and encourage more women to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.

The L'Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowship is designed to provide support to women who are in the early stages of their careers and who are making remarkable contributions to scientific research. The program not only provides financial assistance but also offers invaluable professional development opportunities to these talented women scientists.

Each year, the fellowship awards five grants of $60,000 each to women scientists at the postdoctoral level. The aim is to help them advance their research, enhance their career prospects, and provide a platform to encourage other women to pursue careers in science.

Who Can Apply?

• Hold a PhD and are in a postdoctoral research position by January 31, 2025.
• Maintain postdoctoral status throughout the fellowship year.
• Be a U.S.-born citizen, naturalized citizen, or permanent resident.
• Be affiliated with a U.S.-based academic or research institution.
• Conduct research within the U.S. in the fields of life sciences, physical/material sciences, engineering, technology, computer science, or mathematics.
• Not hold a faculty position.
• Commit to at least 20 hours of outreach activities to support women and girls in science, including mentoring, classroom visits, and other related events.
• Be available to participate in the For Women in Science Awards Week during November 2025.

Application Procedure

• You could be awarded a grant for research in a STEM field.
• We’re seeking five exceptional female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM.
• Candidates must have completed their PhD and have started in their postdoctoral research position by the application deadline.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply.
• Apply to be a 2025 FWIS Awardee. DEADLINE: Applications due by 5:00pm ET on Friday, February 14, 2025.

What Financial Support is Available?

Total Award: $60,000

• $60,000 for one year.
• The funding is intended to support the candidate's research project and provide career enhancement. Suggested uses of the funding include: tuition fees, attendance at meetings and conferences, laboratory supplies, publication costs, computer and technical support, equipment, and instruments.
  • A candidate may use the funding to cover her salary if she can justify why it is not already being covered by her PI or lab.
  • Salaries for technicians and students may be proposed, as long as the candidate can justify that these individuals will directly support the candidate's research.
  • Applicants may allocate up to 10% of their total budget estimate for community service or outreach projects beyond the scope of their proposed research plan (e.g. hosting a science workshop for K-12 students with a local outreach organization).
  • International travel is allowed.

Other Details

The fellowship is managed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on behalf of L’Oréal USA. The AAAS oversees the application and peer-review process, processes fellowship payments, and manages agreements and reports.
