Overview

UTRIP, or the University of Tokyo Research Internship Program, was initiated by the Graduate School of Science (GSS) at the University of Tokyo, a leading global institution in research and education. Launched in June 2010 as part of the GSS's internationalization efforts, UTRIP aims to invite talented undergraduate students from around the world. This summer research program is designed for students interested in pursuing M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in the future.

Participants receive expert research guidance from distinguished faculty members across GSS’s five departments: physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth and planetary science, and biological sciences. The program is open to undergraduate students currently enrolled in their second year or later at an accredited institution outside Japan, with a focus on natural sciences or related fields.

Additionally, the program includes an excursion beyond Tokyo and a short course in Japanese language and culture. UTRIP offers a valuable experience to prepare for graduate-level challenges while immersing students in the academic life at the University of Tokyo.

Who Can Apply?

To apply, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Must have completed at least one full year of a Bachelor’s degree program and be returning to their university after UTRIP.
• Enrollment in natural sciences or a related field is required.
• TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent scores are required unless you meet exemption criteria.
• Proof of coverage during the internship period is mandatory.
• Must be available for the program's full duration.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted online with the following documents:

1. Personal Statement: A detailed essay (700–1000 words) explaining research interests, qualifications, and long-term academic goals.
2. Resume/CV: Highlighting relevant academic and professional experiences.
3. Academic Transcript: Including course grades, credits, and university grading system.
4. English Proficiency Proof: TOEFL/IELTS scores (if applicable).
5. Additional Documents: Any other materials requested by UTRIP.

1. Accommodation: Interns stay in a well-furnished, off-campus residence, located about 30 minutes from the UTokyo campus.
