Overview

The IIE Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) fellowship is a global initiative providing vital support to academics, researchers, and scholars whose lives and careers are threatened in their home countries. Established in 2002 by the Institute of International Education (IIE), this program is committed to safeguarding intellectual freedom and academic talent by enabling scholars to continue their research and teaching in safe environments.

Who Can Apply?

• Professors, senior researchers, and public intellectuals from any country, academic discipline, or field are eligible to apply. Applications are assessed based on the applicant’s academic credentials, the quality and potential of their work, and the severity of the threats they are experiencing.

Priority is given to scholars who:

• Hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field, or possess extensive teaching or research experience at a university, college, or similar institution.
• Are currently facing or have recently escaped severe, direct threats to their lives or careers in their home country or place of residence.
• Exhibit exceptional academic achievements and potential.
• Are likely to contribute meaningfully to their home or host academic communities.

Application Procedure

Step 1: Prepare Application Materials

• Personal Statement
• Reference Letters:
  • Two academic/professional references attesting to your research and academic expertise.
  • Two personal references outlining the threats you face.
• Degree Certificates
• Research Samples
• Host Institution Letter (optional)

Step 3: Placement and Fellowship Agreement

Upon selection, IIE-SRF will coordinate with host institutions to secure an academic placement that aligns with your expertise. Final fellowship amounts are determined based on location, cost of living, and contributions from host institutions.

What Financial Support is Available?

• A grant of up to US$25,000.
• Individual health insurance.
• Support for a visiting academic appointment of up to one year (renewable for a second year).
