Why Choose Hamburg Merit Scholarships?

The University of Hamburg provides international students with partial financial support of up to €930 per month. Scholarships are typically awarded for 12 months (2 semesters) and may be extended up to 3 years in exceptional cases. With only 2–3 scholarships granted each round, it’s a competitive opportunity for highly driven individuals.

Another benefit? There’s no age restriction for applicants. However, German nationals and students eligible for BAföG (federal student loans) are not eligible.

Who Can Apply?

  • Must not receive similar financial support from other sources


Selection Criteria

Applicants are evaluated on:

  • Academic performance and achievements

  • Special recognitions, presentations, publications, or awards

  • Social involvement or voluntary activities

  • Financial need or personal challenges

  • Reference letters from academic staff at Hamburg University


Required Documents

  • Updated CV

  • Motivation letter

  • Record of academic achievements

  • Proof of social or intercultural engagement (if applicable)

  • Transcript or STiNE printout (Bachelor’s)

  • Degree certificate (Master’s or PhD)

  • Two recommendation forms from doctoral-level teaching staff


Application Process

  • Apply online via the University of Hamburg application portal

  • Submit all necessary documents and your STiNE ID

  • Ensure two reference evaluations are submitted

  • Incomplete applications or missing references will not be considered
