In an era of rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), one key area remains significantly underexplored — the economics of AI. While we often hear about technical breakthroughs, understanding their economic implications is just as crucial. Enter the Stripe Economics of AI Fellowship — a unique initiative designed to support early-stage researchers diving into this emerging and high-impact field.
The Stripe Fellowship aims to bridge the knowledge gap by funding foundational academic research on the economic impacts of AI. Whether you're a graduate student or an early-career researcher, if you're curious about how transformative AI might reshape economies, this is a great opportunity to pursue that curiosity with solid institutional support.
Selected fellows receive:
A baseline grant of $10,000 (with the possibility of additional funding)
Invitation to an exclusive summer conference in San Francisco
Access to valuable datasets via Stripe and its partners
A collaborative community of like-minded researchers
The first cohort will include 15–20 fellows, forming the foundation of a vibrant research community at the intersection of AI and economics.
The fellowship is open to:
Graduate students (Master’s or PhD)
Postdocs and early-career researchers (including Assistant Professors)
Applicants from any country
Researchers from any discipline, including those outside of economics
No prior experience in AI economics is required. The goal is to attract fresh ideas, so candidates with strong research potential but limited background are also encouraged to apply. Also, no project proposal is needed to submit the initial application.
Stripe is especially interested in research that:
Focuses on transformative AI (AI capable of shifting societal paradigms, similar to the industrial revolution)
Has a forward-looking approach
Holds long-term relevance and importance
Can be developed at a fast pace
Examples include studies on labor displacement, productivity, AI's influence on markets, regulatory frameworks, or broader macroeconomic shifts.
Application Deadline: April 15, 2025 (10 PM PT)
Decision Notification: On or before April 25, 2025
Initial Conference: Early Summer 2025 (San Francisco)
The application process is designed to be quick and efficient, taking less than 30 minutes to complete.
Selected fellows are expected to:
Commit to working on at least one research project related to AI economics
Present a brief proposal during the fellowship’s opening conference
Engage with the research community and contribute to academic conversations in this field
While formal deliverables are minimal, the emphasis is on genuine interest, thoughtful engagement, and producing impactful, rigorous research.
Every fellow receives a minimum of $10,000 in funding. Additional support can be requested if:
The research requires data purchases
Graduate students need to buy out teaching or RA duties to focus more on their project
The funding is flexible and tailored to help researchers make tangible progress.
If you're passionate about understanding the economic ripple effects of AI, this fellowship offers:
Financial support
Prestigious networking opportunities
Access to exclusive resources
A platform to accelerate your research career
It’s a golden opportunity to be part of cutting-edge research that could shape policies and innovation in years to come.
