The Johnson Justice Fellowship (JFF) is a prestigious initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of social justice leaders. Following the remarkable impact of its first cohort, JFF is now accepting applications for its second cycle, offering a transformative opportunity for individuals dedicated to public service and social justice.
Building on the success of its inaugural fellows—who have set a high benchmark for emerging social justice leadership—JFF continues to focus on fostering diverse and dynamic leaders. The program’s mission is to create a strong pipeline of professionals dedicated to serving the public good, ensuring that leadership within the public sector mirrors the diversity of the communities it represents.
For the second cohort, JFF proudly collaborates with three influential organizations:
New American Leaders (Electoral Engagement)
New Economy Project (Policy Change and Advocacy)
Riders Alliance (Grassroots Movement Building)
Each fellowship position is full-time, based in New York City, and runs for two years, from September 2025 to August 2027. Fellows will receive a salary ranging from $70,000 to $80,000, along with a full benefits package.
The Johnson Justice Fellowship provides hands-on experience in social justice work through three specialized tracks:
Grassroots Movement Building (Riders Alliance)
Engages in community-driven advocacy
Organizes campaigns to improve public services
Empowers local communities for systemic change
Policy Change and Advocacy (New Economy Project)
Develops and advocates for progressive policies
Conducts research and policy analysis
Works on economic justice and financial inclusion
Electoral Engagement (New American Leaders)
Focuses on political empowerment and voter engagement
Trains diverse leaders for public office
Strengthens democracy through inclusive representation
Established in September 2023, the Johnson Justice Fellowship was created to bridge the gap between aspiring social justice leaders and meaningful public sector careers. The inaugural cohort—comprising Abraham Lugo, Salma Allam, and José Galarza—set the foundation for future fellows through their impactful work with Riders Alliance, the Center for Popular Democracy, and New American Leaders.
JFF remains steadfast in its mission to shape a future where the public sector reflects the diverse voices and experiences of the communities it serves. By investing in emerging leaders, this fellowship plays a crucial role in advancing equity, justice, and systemic change.
