The Richard and Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship, a distinguished initiative in collaboration with Chatham House, provides early-to-mid-career professionals with the unique opportunity to engage in a ten-month residency at Chatham House, London. This fellowship allows fellows to undertake independent research while actively contributing to the institute’s core work and expanding their professional network in international affairs.
This fellowship is open to candidates from all nationalities who meet the following criteria:
Education: Applicants must possess at least a completed BA degree or equivalent and have prior research experience.
Career Stage: Candidates should be at an early-to-mid-career level and may come from various backgrounds, including academia, NGOs, business, government departments, civil society, and media.
Knowledge & Interest: Applicants should have a strong interest in international affairs, their chosen research field, and the broader mission of Chatham House.
Age Restrictions: There are no age limitations for applicants.
Commitment: Fellows are expected to work full-time on their fellowship and are not permitted to undertake additional work or studies simultaneously.
Timeframe: The fellowship runs for ten months, from October 2025 to July 2026.
Location: Fellows will be based at Chatham House, London, with hybrid work options available.
Fellows engage in three primary areas:
Independent Research Project (60%)
Fellows choose and design an individual research project with guidance from a Chatham House expert.
Contribution to Ongoing Research (20%)
Fellows support their host research team and other Chatham House initiatives.
Leadership Masterclass Programme (20%)
A key component that enhances knowledge, networks, self-awareness, and leadership skills.
Monthly Stipend: Fellows receive £2,365 per month, covering living expenses in London.
Relocation Costs: Reasonable expenses for flights, transportation, visa processing, and temporary accommodation are covered.
Healthcare: The UK Immigration Healthcare Surcharge is paid, granting access to NHS services (some exclusions apply).
Research & Outreach Support: Funding for fieldwork, conferences, publications, roundtables, and events is provided.
Post-Fellowship Benefits: Alumni receive continued access to the Academy faculty, alumni network, and a five-year Chatham House membership.

Shortlisting – Applications are reviewed and shortlisted by the selection committee.
Interviews – Shortlisted candidates participate in a Zoom interview with Chatham House representatives.
Final Selection – Successful candidates are notified via email.
