Established in 1988 by the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), the Jennings Randolph Senior Fellowship provides a distinguished platform for seasoned professionals in research, policy, and practice. Hosted at USIP’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., the fellowship supports scholars contributing to the fields of peacebuilding and security cooperation. Experts with substantial experience in conflict prevention, security collaboration, and international partnerships are encouraged to apply.
Duration: Eight months (January 2026 – August 2026)
Location: USIP Headquarters, Washington, D.C.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct independent research
Collaborate with experts from USIP and DSCU
Publish findings through USIP’s platforms
Engage in expert discussions, the DSCU Speaker Series, and the annual Security Cooperation Conference
To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Professional Background: Significant expertise in research, policy, or practical applications related to security cooperation.
Academic Achievements: A demonstrated record of scholarly work in security cooperation, peacebuilding, or related disciplines.
Nationality Requirement: Open to candidates worldwide; however, they must be eligible to work in Washington, D.C., during the fellowship.
Research Relevance: Proposals should align with the priorities of USIP and the Defense Security Cooperation University (DSCU), focusing on security cooperation and conflict prevention.
Language Proficiency: Application materials must be submitted in English.
Stipend: $15,000 per month
Travel: One round-trip airfare to Washington, D.C.
Exclusions: Housing and health insurance costs are not covered.
Fellows will examine the role of security cooperation in fostering regional stability, preventing conflicts that impact U.S. interests, and enhancing security in partner nations. Research proposals should address:
The effectiveness of security cooperation initiatives in preventing conflicts
Evaluation of programs such as personnel exchanges, training, and institutional capacity-building
Best practices for integrating security cooperation into peacebuilding strategies
